It is a Japanese media franchise. The Sanrio Boys was first created in November 2015. In the beginning, it was conceptualized as a social media project to promote merchandise for Sanrio’s best-selling characters. You would know Hello Kitty as it’s the most successful and best known coming from Sanrio. The company began in 1963 and has since created over 400 characters.
After gaining popularity, it grew to have its own merchandise line, a manga series, a smartphone game for Android, and iOS, a series of character drama CDs, and an anime television series. It belongs to the genre of Slice of Life.
Originally the Sanrio boys consisted of five characters, but now it has expanded to seven. Because of the character’s popularity, they received their own line of character merchandise from June 2016.
Sanrio Boys – Manga And Anime
The manga was written by Mai Ando in the magazine Manga One. The first one was published in the year 2016, and there are five volumes. Two manga adaptations were running concurrently. The anime television series aired from 6 January 2018 to 24 March 2018 with a total of 12 episodes and each episode being 24 minutes long. The production house was Studio Pierrot. It was written by Takashi Aoshima and directed by Masashi Kudō. Its music was given by Junpei Fujita.
Sanrio Boys – Story And Characters
The story of Sanrio Boys revolves around a normal high school student named Kouta Hasegawa. He likes his Pompompurin stuffed animal, a Sanrio character gifted by his grandmother. After an incident with other kids, who accuse him of being girly, he starts becoming ashamed about his attachment to Pompompurin. But through unexpected events, he ends up meeting four students in the school who also like Sanrio characters. These four are, Yuu Mizuno, who is a flashy boy popular with girls; Ryou Nishimiya is an underclassman and a library assistant; Shunsuke Yoshino who is a member of the soccer team, and Seiichirou Minamoto who is the president of the student council. After being with his new friends, Kouta realizes that there is no need to be embarrassed about liking Sanrio characters. All of them aim to create a play for the cultural festival to transform normal school life into a sparkly one.
The other two characters later added include Subaru Amagaya, who is a wannabe delinquent, and Naoki Sugami who is a biology teacher. Both these characters were introduced in April 2017. Yu Mizuno loves My Melody, Ryou Nishimiya likes Kiki and Lala from Little Twin Stars, Shunsuke Yoshino is a fan of Hello Kitty, Seiichiro Minamoto loves Cinnamoroll, Subaru loves Badtz-Maru, and Naoki loves Keroppi.
